KEY POINTS

Livestock slaughtering and meat production quarterly trend movements for March 2017:
  • Cattle slaughters increased marginally (up 0.1%) for the quarter ending March 2017 when compared with December 2016 and decreased by 225,000 head or 11.5% year-on-year.
  • The number of calves slaughtered for the quarter ending March 2017 decreased by 17,600 head or 15.5% compared to the previous quarter. Compared to this period last year, there was a decrease of 46,800 head or 32.8%.
  • Sheep slaughters for the quarter ending March 2017 decreased by 26,900 head or 1.7% compared with December 2016 and by 384,100 head or 19.4% year-on-year.
  • Lamb slaughters increased 81,700 head or 1.4% for the quarter ending March 2017 but were down 41,900 head or 0.7% when compared with March 2016.
  • Pig slaughters increased by 7,100 head for the quarter ending March 2017 compared with December 2016 and increased by 46,200 head or 3.7% year-on-year.
  • Chicken slaughters and meat production figures remained steady in the March 2017 quarter. When compared year-on-year slaughter numbers were up 2.9% and meat production up 1.8%.
  • Receivals of wool increased by 2.7% in the March 2017 quarter to stand at 96,800 tonnes. When compared year-on-year wool receivals were up 9.7%.
